How do I become an apprentice or trainee?

You must be employed by an employer as an apprentice or trainee to gain access to apprenticeship and traineeship training at Swan TAFE.

If you would like to enrol in a course without being employed, consider a pre-apprenticeship course. Our pre-apprenticeship courses are an ideal way to get a feeling for a trade, and in the present economy are an ideal entry into an apprenticeship or traineeship position.

Signing up

Once you have an apprenticeship or traineeship position, you or your employer contacts an Australian Apprenticeships Centre to organise the signing of your training contract. This is required by law to protect your rights and those of the employer.

A training contract is a legally binding contract between you, your employer (and your parent or legal guardian where required). Your training contract is for a nominal term which is the expected time it will take you to complete your apprenticeship or traineeship. It outlines the rights and responsibilities for you and the employer.

Your training contract is forwarded to the ApprentiCentre for registration of your apprenticeship or traineeship. ApprentiCentre writes to you advising you of the approval of your apprenticeship/traineeship.

For more information on apprenticeships and traineeships we recommend the Apprenticentre website.
