VET for School Students
Swan TAFE Industry Link Training Programs are conducted in workshops and classrooms which offer industry standard facilities and equipment. Students are given hands-on training on campus, in simulated workplaces or on-site in the workplace, giving you both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to guarantee well balanced training. All training provided by Swan TAFE is endorsed under the Australian Qualifications Training Framework and provides graduates with a nationally recognised qualification.
What is VET in Schools or VET for School Students?
Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools or VET for School Students (VETfSS) allows high school students to complete part or all of a nationally recognised vocational qualification while still studying towards their secondary graduation.
VET as part of the WA Certificate of Education
High school students can study towards completion of the WA Certificate of Education (WACE) as well as VET Units of Competency. This can be structured in many ways, including VET incorporated into a Course of Study, and VET instead of a Course of Study.
What courses are on offer?
The links on the right take you through to the options available, and some career paths that these can take you.
Why should I be a part of it?
The VET in Schools programs are relevant to industry needs and have pathways to employment and further training, including Traineeships and Apprenticeships.
You will gain a realistic understanding of industry exceptions, improved employment prospects and possibly advanced standing entry in TAFE and university.
VET in Schools programs can help you meet University Minimum Entrance Requirements, without the stress of TEE. Combining school and TAFE provides senior school students with a unique opportunity to gain high level TAFE qualifications without sacrificing the opportunity to progress to university. Students can select from a range of combined TAFE school qualifications leading to the completion of a Certificate III in Year 11 and Certificate IV in Year 12.
When are the classes?
Classes will commence in March 2009 and continue until the end of Term 3 for most programs. The majority of classes are held from 9.00am to 3.30pm, however, this may vary depending on the course and location of the class. You will receive a letter before the program begins advising you of the arrangements for the first class (which will include an orientation). All the details that you require will be in this letter e.g., date of first class, start and finish time, campus, special requirements.
Where are the classes?
All classes are held at a Swan TAFE campus. Which campus will depend on the area of study you choose. For location details of Swan TAFE's campuses click here.
What do I wear to TAFE?
You do not need to wear your school uniform to TAFE but you are expected to dress appropriately. Where special or protective clothing and/or footwear is required, it must be worn — without exception! Forgetting to bring your protective clothing will mean that you will be excluded from the TAFE workshops.
Attendance
You are responsible for ensuring you attend all scheduled classes. Attendance will be recorded and any absences are reported to your school. The VET Coordinator at your school will be contacted to discuss the appropriateness of you continuing with the program if absences are repeated. Tell your TAFE lecturer in advance if you know that you will be absent from any scheduled classes.
Fees and charges
Secondary school students undertaking VET courses as part of their secondary education are exempt from tuition, resource and enrolment fees, however, depending on the chosen industry may be required to purchase protective clothing, text books and trade equipment at an additional cost.
How do I enrol?
Make an appointment to talk to your school VET Coordinator to find out more information.
How do I get my results
Official confirmation of your results (Statement of Academic Record) will be sent to your school at the end of your program. You must apply for your Certificate (Award) upon successful completion of your qualification.
